ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Some travelers may soon be able to keep their belt and shoes on as they pass through security at Lambert Airport.

Tuesday, the TSA will expand its ‘pre-check program’ to include Lambert.

However, News 4 learned this is will only affect a small segment of the population.

Monday a representative of the TSA said the pre-check program at Lambert works only for select customers who use American Airlines.

Eventually other airlines could participate, but for the time being, American is the only carrier at Lambert.

For now, it is very much a VIP program.

Travelers must be a frequent flier with American, and have been invited to participate, or opt in.

Otherwise you can apply through other trusted travel programs.

Passengers will still be subject to metal detectors and other forms of security; however they won’t have to go through the hassle of removing belts, shoes, or liquids from carry-on luggage.

News 4 spoke with some American Airlines passengers about whether they think pre-screening is a good idea.

“When we went into Chicago, it was a total nightmare. They just don’t have enough people to process, and it was all backed up, took forever,” said one traveler.

“I fly about three times a year, and that will be a good help that way I don’t have to take off my shoes, and get a pat-down and that kind of stuff,” said another.

Tuesday officials with the TSA will be at Lambert to provide more details about the pre-check program.
