ST. LOUIS (BaseballSTL) -- The St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday purchased the contract of Brian Fuentes from AA-Springfield.

In a corresponding move, relief pitcher Victor Marte was optioned to AAA-Memphis.

It was not immediately known when the 36-year-old Fuentes would join the big club.

Meanwhile, pitcher Chuckie Fick was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Fuentes, a four-time all-star, pitched a scoreless inning on Tuesday for Springfield, striking out two.

He has the most saves in Colorado Rockies history with 115 and is one of just six left-handed pitchers in MLB history to have recorded more than 200 saves.

The 6-4, 230-pound California native was a National League All-Star for three-straight seasons for Colorado from 2005-07, helping the team win the NLCS in 2007. He also led the majors with 48 saves in 2009 for the Los Angeles Angels.
