- David Freese is not in the lineup this evening largely because he does not have good numbers against Dodgers’ starting pitcher Chad Billingsley.  Freese is 0-6 with 6 strikeouts against the 27-year old.  Matheny says “this is not a good matchup for him”.  Freese’s replacement today, Matt Carpenter, has never faced Billingsley.

- Matheny says offense can come and go for any team and the good ones don’t let it go away for very long.  The Cards broke out of a rut following the All Star break by scoring 19 runs in the last 2 games.

- As for the trade deadline approaching and deals going down all over the league, Matheny tells me it’s hard not to notice what is happening but they also know his own club is doing everything it can to improve.  He says GM John Mozeliak talks to him on a daily basis as far as updating him on where they stand on trades.  Matheny told me this is a fun time of the year because there’s a lot of change.

- Matheny says Joe Kelly (tonight’s starter) has matured as a pitcher since he’s come up to the major leagues.  Kelly has much more room for error because he’s got such a good arm and nasty stuff.  Matheny also called him a very impressive athlete.

- Berkman is still working his way back from coming off the disabled list.  With the day off yesterday for him and facing tough lefty Clayton Kershaw tomorrow there won’t be much pressure to have him out there according to the manager.  It all comes down to how Berkman is responding and how he looks on the field.  He needs to get his timing back and Matheny says the only way to do that is to play him.
