O'Fallon, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A suspected burglar led police on a dangerous car chase through St. Clair County Friday afternoon.
Eric McKeller, 54, was charged with residential burglary after police say he broke into a home in the 1200 block of Simmons Road in unincorporated O'Fallon, Ill. around 3 p.m.
A female resident told police she noticed a smashed window when she returned home, then saw the suspect running away. Police say McKeller drove off in a maroon Oldsmobile Alero, and the resident gave chase in her own vehicle.
According to police, an officer spotted the suspect's car on Milburn School Road and pulled McKeller over. When the officer approached McKeller's vehicle, however, the suspect allegedly sped away.
Police say the officer stopped the pursuit after McKeller struck another vehicle and continued driving dangerously. Other officers reportedly tried to stop the suspect, but had to abandon the chase for public safety reasons.
About an hour later, St. Clair County police say an officer spotted the vehicle on Douglas Road and arrested McKeller.
Deputies then located the stolen jewelry at a Belleville pawn shop.
McKeller was transported to the St. Clair County Jail, where he is being held on $100,000 bond.
