Doctors: Not putting your iPad, tablet down before bed can be hazardous to your health

BOSTON (WFSB) - According to researchers in Boston, people should to resist the urge to look at their smartphone or iPad before going to sleep at night because it could have a negative impact on a person's health or even be deadly.

Researchers found that 90 percent of people either use some sort of electric device such as an iPad or smartphone before falling asleep. Doctors are asking their patients to resist the urge before calling it a night.

"Usually before I got to bed, I check my phone and then I put it to the side to charge it," said Carolann Alos, who uses smartphones.

"I typically just check my phone for messages," Mal Winkley said.

A new study from Bringham and Women's Hospital found they're not alone. Nine out of 10 people are on their phones or iPads within an hour of bedtime. It forces people to miss some necessary sleep because of what we’re doing on these devices such as texting, reading or watching our favorite show.

"I think they're right. It probably is detrimental to your health," Winkley said.

"The problem with electronic devices is they produce light," Dr. Edward Salerno with Hartford Hospital. "That light acts as a trigger to keep us awake and not allow us to get to sleep."

When we do finally get some shut eye, it's usually not enough according to the Boston researchers. Sleep deprivation can lead to an increase risk for obesity.

"There are lots of health effects that are associated with sleep deprivation," Salerno said. "Cardiovascular effects, being able to focus and concentrate, motor vehicle accidents."

But Salerno said there's another fix other than putting the device down.

"Some of these devices will allow you to switch the background," Salerno said. "You can get a black background with white is a little bit better, cause its not as bright."

If you need to read a book, researchers suggest reading the printed version of books and dimming the lights.
