BENTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A grandfather and grandson are dead after the grandfather jumped into the water to save his grandson in Benton, Illinois.
Terry Calvert, 63, of New Baden, and his two grandsons, ages 11 and 13, of Collinsville, were fishing Monday afternoon in the Gun Creek area of Rend Lake.
The 13-year-old grandson fell into the lake and Calvert jumped into the water to help the boy. The younger boy then flagged down other fishermen after his grandfather struggled in the cold water. The other fishermen were able to pull Calvert into the boat, but the boy was not found.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene and transported Calvert to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The coroner later determined neither were wearing a life vest.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., almost two hours after the initial incident, the 13-year-old boy was found by a search and rescue diver. The boy was brought to shore unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Neighbors spoke to News 4 Monday night and talked about how well known the family was in town.
"It's heart-wrenching," said Ken Hagarty, "A 13-year-old boy lost his life today. Everybody knows each other pretty much here and you can understand how it's going to affect a lot of people. I feel really bad for the family right now."
"[They were] just great people and well known in the community," Nancy Albers said, "Everybody knew him. Just really, really sad."
The funeral for the grandson will be held Saturday. Funeral plans for Calvert have yet to be made.
