COLUMBIA, Mo. (Mizzou Football App)-- The Missouri Tigers have chosen a replacement for former defensive coordinator Dave Steckel by naming University of Memphis defensive coordinator Barry Odom to the same position. The University also announced that Odom will serve as the linebackers coach.
Odom, 38, will join the team after their bowl game, taking over for Coach Steckel, who is leaving the team to become the head coach at Missouri State.
Odom has served as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Memphis for the past three seasons. Memphis is coming off of a 10-3 season in which Odom's defense ranked 5th nationally in scoring defense and 22nd in total defense.
Odom has done well to revive a program that ranked 117th nationally in total defense upon his arrival in 2011 and will take over a Tigers team that ranked 22nd in total defense this season.
Odom's hiring is a homecoming for the coordinator, as Odom starred as a linebacker at Mizzou from 1996-1999 and served in numerous roles on Pinkel's staff for nine seasons before taking the Memphis job.
