PHOENIX (CBS5) - A woman who said she couldn’t afford to keep her 3-month-old baby turned the infant over to a complete stranger Saturday night, police said.

The baby was clad only in a diaper when the woman approached Jennifer Argo at an apartment complex at 1634 W. Shangri La at around 7 p.m.

The woman said she couldn’t afford to feed or clothe her baby and that she had six other children who were on top of a nearby mountain, Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said.

Officers were called and when they arrived they began canvassing the area for the other potentially endangered children on the nearby mountains. They found nothing.

Officers were able to locate information that led them to the baby’s 39-year-old mother.  The suspect was incoherent and provided multiple accounts of what happened to her infant, Holmes said.

The biological father of the infant told officers he had been treating the apartment for insects when he noticed the suspect had left.

When the suspect returned, according to the father, she told him she had turned the baby over to the Arizona Department of Child Safety.

The suspect was interviewed by detectives but a reason for her behavior could not be determined, Holmes said.

The suspect was eventually transported to an Urgent Psychiatric Care facility for an evaluation.

The investigation will be submitted to the County Attorney’s office for review.

There was also a 12-year-old child and an 18-month-old infant in the home.

The mother’s name has not yet been released.
