EDWARDSVILLE (KMOV.com)- The Edwardsville Police Department is warning residents of the area of a phone scam they've received calls about in the past week.

Scammers identifying themselves as employees of the Internal Revenue Service are claiming to be working with local police agencies and stating that call recipients will be arrested if he or she does not wire money as directed.

Some scammers are able to make it appear as if the call is coming from the Edwardsville Police Department non-emergency line (618-656-2131), but police urge residents not to fall for the scam.

Police say the IRS will not call individuals to solicit money or threaten immediate arrest if money is not sent.

If you have the slightest doubt of the legitimacy of a call, contact a trusted friend, a relative or your local police department and do not send money to individuals making these requests.
