EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Two southwestern Illinois woman are accused of stealing from a food pantry’s delivery truck.
Prosecutors in Madison County have charged Betty Jones, 64, of Alton and her daughter-in-law, Jerri Jones, 45, of Godfrey, with felony theft.
Investigators say the women were volunteers for the Community Hope Center and transported food from St. Louis. They’re accused of stealing food and soda items between Sept. 1 and Wednesday that were donated to the pantry.
Betty Jones told The Associated Press on Friday that the case is a misunderstanding. She insists police “blew this out of proportion” and misinterpreted their rearranging the truck as theft.
Calls to Jerri Jones’ home went unanswered Friday.
The theft charge is punishable by up to five years in prison.
