ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A series of hailstorms that hit the St. Louis area on April 28 were collectively the second most costly in United States history, according to the National Weather Service.
Several waves of thunderstorms produced numerous hail larger than the size of a baseball during the late afternoon and evening hours.
According to the Property Claim Services of New Jersey, 245,000 claims in Missouri and Illinois totaled an estimated $1.6 billion in losses.
The most costly hailstorm in U.S. history also impacted the St. Louis area. On April 10, 2001, a storm tracking from southern Kansas City to northern portions of the St. Louis area produced insured losses of $1.5 billion, which is $1.9 billion when cost is adjusted to 2012 dollars.
