Edwardsville man sentenced for killing daughter

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—A southwestern Illinois man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Thursday in a shaken-baby case involving his daughter, who died years after she was originally injured.

A Madison County judge convicted Torrance Rogers, 31, of Edwardsville in July of first-degree murder.

Rogers already spent about seven years in prison on a felony attempted battery charge related to the injuries he inflicted on Taylor Rogers in 1999 after the infant wouldn’t stop crying.

The girl was left nearly blind in that attack and required around-the-clock care. She was 9 when she eventually died of bronchial pneumonia in 2009.

Rogers waived his right to a jury trial and agreed to have his case decided by a judge.
