ST. LOUIS ( – The driver of a pickup truck was charged Wednesday night after police say the man crashed into four pedestrians in south St. Louis while driving drunk.
Authorities said just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, 66-year-old Alfred James lost control of the pickup truck as he traveled north on Kingshighway.
Police say the pickup truck hit a light pole, then hit four pedestrians who were on the sidewalk at Kingshighway and Landsdowne Avenue. After hitting the four victims, the vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant and came to a stop.
The fire department says two of the victims are young children and the other two are either teenagers or young adults. The exact ages and identities of the victims are not yet known. All four were taken to area hospitals in stable condition.
Witness Jeffrey Darrough says that he noticed the truck driving erratically, shortly before the vehicle hit the four pedestrians.
"The one female was in midflight when I turned around," said Darrough.
"And after he hit them, he never braked or anything."
James is charged with four counts of second degree assault and driving while intoxicated. All four victims are expected to survive.
