Cardinals take Jaime Garcia off playoff roster, replace with Shelby Miller

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- The St. Louis Cardinals have taken pitcher Jaime Garcia off the postseason roster after an MRI showed a strain of his rotator cuff.

Rookie pitcher Shelby Miller will take Garcia’s place and presumably pitch out of the bullpen. According to multiple reports, Lance Lynn will move into the rotation.

According to MLB postseason rules, Garcia is ineligible from pitching again in the NLDS and – if the Cardinals advance past the Washington Nationals – the NLCS.

Team officials said Garcia will get a second opinion.

Garcia pitched two innings in Game 2 of the NLDS Monday - allowing one run on two hits and three walks - before being removed with shoulder discomfort.

The left-hander later said he had been dealing with the shoulder issue for a few days and did not tell team officials about the injury until after being removed from the game.

“This is one of those things where it didn’t get better the last couple days,” said Garcia. “Today I thought I’d go out there, make no excuses and give our team a chance to win. But it didn’t get better again. It’s hard to explain. It just wasn’t right.”

Miller, 22, was 1-0 during the regular season with a 1.32 ERA in 13 2/3 innings pitched.
