Brewer of Schlafly Beer marks milestone

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The St. Louis brewer of Schlafly Beer is celebrating after reaching a production milestone.

It has brewed 30,000 barrels this year. That's a 6,000-barrel increase over its previous record, which it set just last year.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunday that company celebrated over the weekend at its downtown Tap Room.

St. Louis Brewery Inc. co-owner Tom Schlafly says some people didn't think the brewer would last until 1992, let alone 18 years.

His business partner, Dan Kopman, says 30,000 barrels feels pretty good but that the record isn't likely to stand for very long.

The company is currently expanding brewing capacity at its Bottleworks brewery in Maplewood. When work is completed, sometime in 2010, Schlafly will have the capacity to ship 50,000 barrels a year.
