Purse-snatching puts shoppers on alert

A crime-ridden night throughout the Metro area kept News 4 photographers busy while you were sleeping. There were a series of carjackings and shootings, plus a purse snatching in the parking lot of a popular South St. Louis County parking lot.

Police say it happened around 10:30 p.m. -- just before the Target on Rusty Street off of Lindbergh Boulevard closed at midnight. Police say a woman was walking in the Target parking lot when two men in a white Dodge Stratus came up to her and demanded her purse. She gave it to them, they took off and she was not hurt.

Just before the purse snatching, county police were worked a carjacking. That happened at 10 p.m. at the Little Cesars on Telegraph Road. Police say two gunmen came up to the driver, pointed a gun at the victim and made off with his car. Police are now looking for the two men responsible, driving that stolen car -- a red, Chevy Impala.

I checked some police websites this morning, and in both cases, the victims did the right thing -- they got away and did not get hurt. Remember -- your life is more important than your car. Police say don't argue with the thieves -- just try to get a good look at them, get away and call police.

If it's your purse thieves are after this holiday shopping season, here are some tips to remember:

-Only carry what you need. If you can just stick an i.d. and credit card in your pocket -- you've eliminated a big temptation.

-Try not to ever display large sums of money .

-Carry your purse in front of you and close to your body.

-Trust your instincts. Always ask for an escort out to your car if you don't feel comfortable.
