Planned drug deal tied to fatal shooting in Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE — Authorities say a planned drug transaction led to Thursday’s shooting death of a Granite City teenager.

Two suspects were charged Monday in Madison County with the killing of 19-year-old Stephen C. Nemsky in the 4100 block of Division Street in Granite City.

Vincent R.J. Blue, 21, and Javeon D. Hawkins, 16, both of the first block of Brookhill Court in Collinsville were charged with two counts of first degree murder. Blue was also charged with one count of armed robbery and Hawkins was charged with two counts of armed robbery. Hawkins will be tried as an adult, under state law.

Capt. Brad Wells with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and deputy commander of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, which assisted the investigation, said the suspects had arranged to meet Nemsky at the location for the purpose of a drug transaction, but instead robbed and then shot him.

"The victim was there to purchase marijuana," Wells said. "We believe the two suspects planned on robbing him before the transaction ever took place. They robbed him of approximately $100."
