Two men, described as middle aged or older, shot two Trumpeter swans on Friday. The men said they mistook them for snow geese. However, Trumper swans are FOUR times as large as snow geese, according to the conservation department.
Luckily, other hunters in the area saw the flock of swans, then heard the shots, and called authorities. The swans are endangered and the two men may face criminal charges. The World Bird Sanctuary expects to spent seven to ten thousand dollars returning the birds to health so they can be re-introduced to the wild. There are captive breeding programs underway trying to save this population from extinction and these two guys go out in one day and shoot them. The Sanctuary is hoping public donations will help it pay for the birds' care.
