KMOV - Illinois officials are reminding drivers that the new year brings some tough new laws against using cell phones behind the wheel.
The new laws ban drivers from all texting while driving. Using a cell phone in school and construction zones is also banned under the new law.
The fines will range from $75 to $100 hands-free devices are exempt.
"I think it's an important law, it is going to be very hard for me and my fellow officers to enforce, but I think more and more honest folks will abide by the law and undertand the principle of the law is to save lives not impede on their rights," says Sgt. Michael Schaefer of the O'f allon Police Department.
