'Special master' to be appointed for fire district

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) -- A judge plans to appoint a "special master" on Friday to oversee the finances of a troubled fire district that serves part of St. Louis County.

Judge John Ross announced his decision this past week when he accused the leaders of the Northeast Ambulance and Fire Protection District of "acting in self-interest and not in the interest of the public."

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that he also cited evidence of continuing Sunshine Law violations, accounting irregularities and failure to follow the court's rulings.

Newly appointed board member Bridget Quinlisk-Dailey was the only Northeast board member at the hearing. She praised the decision and said the funds should remain frozen "until we can get the board to act within the law."
