Lincoln County sheriff threatens drastic cuts

TROY, Mo. (AP) -- An eastern Missouri sheriff is warning that possible budget cuts could force him to close the jail or pull officers off the road and out of schools.

Detective Shayne Duryea says Lincoln County Sheriff Mike Krigbaum expects commissioners to ask him to cut $1.3 million out of a $5.4 million budget. Duryea told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the cuts would require shutting down the jail or the patrol and community services divisions.

Presiding Lincoln County commissioner Sean O'Brien says no one has asked for a specific cut from the Sheriff's Department. He says the sheriff has been told his revenue is about $1.3 million below budget.

The sheriff and county commissioners have been sparring over funding.
