Woman seriously hurt in Calhoun County crash

HARDIN - Black ice is being blamed for a two-vehicle collision that seriously injured a Hardin woman Wednesday in Calhoun County.

Calhoun County Sheriff Bill Heffington said his department responded to the call at 7:28 a.m. Wednesday on Illinois River Road, approximately 1.5 miles north of Batchtown Road.

Heffington said Charles H. Burch, 31, of Brussels, was driving a 2005 diesel Dodge pickup truck north on Illinois River Road when he lost control of the vehicle on black ice on the road.

Burch's pickup truck went spinning into the southbound lane, causing the southbound 1999 Dodge Caravan driven by Gwendolyn H. Herkert, 34, of Hardin, to slam into the rear passenger side of the pickup truck at the rear wheel.

Herkert, who was injured seriously, had to be extricated from her vehicle by the Hardin Fire Department.
