Son of slain officer in jail for trying to kill Cahokia cop

KMOV - A 26-year-old man is in the St. Clair county jail accused of trying to kill a police officer.

News 4 has learned that his father was a police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty a few months ago.

On Friday morning, a woman called Cahokia police asking to have her brother removed from a home. Minutes later, veteran officer Teresa Fields arrived at the scene.

As Fields got out of her patrol car, she noticed a man standing in the driveway. As she walked toward the man, she got a radio call, looked down, and heard two clicks. As Officer Fields lifted her head, she saw a gun two feet from her face.

According to police, the suspect, McNamee, then tried to fire again, but the gun wouldn't work.

McNamee then took off on foot, and Officer Fields ran after him. She eventually caught up with him a few houses down, and held him at gun point until other officers arrived.

Once McNamee was under arrest, officers confiscated a gun, magazine, ammo and noticed the gun was still in the cocked position, meaning he tried to fire..

It wasn't until investigators sat down with McNamee's family that they learned his father was Centreville officer, Lt. Gregory Jonas, who died in June on the job.

McNamee's being held on a $1 million bond.
