Good morning -- For my first day working mornings for News4 Awake, I was sent to the scene of a deadly accident in North St. Louis County.
It was immediately obvious just how serious the accident was. Within half an hour, paramedics were working to pull a man's body from the mangled metal that was left of his car. Debris was scattered all over the road, blocking both the north and southbound lanes of Lucas and Hunt between Jenwood and Calvin Streets.
According to a paramedic I talked to on scene, the man in the car had crossed the center line, slamming into a street sweeper in the southbound lane. The driver of that sweeper, from Katsam Enterprises, was taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
It took crews close to two hours to reopen the road. Meanwhile, students walking to their bus stops had to dodge police cars and news crews.
Authorities have not released the identities of the crash victims, pending family notification. The crash remains under investigation.
Hopefully tomorrow brings some better news, folks.
