Alton man seeks more damages after jury award

EDWARDSVILLE - An Alton man is asking for sanctions and an additional $500,000 in damages against an insurance company after he won a lawsuit in which a jury awarded him $1.3 million compensation for a severed foot.

Steven Thomas Kirk of Alton, who lost a foot and part of a leg in a traffic crash on June 30, 2006, is claiming Mercury Insurance Co. persuaded - and possibly bribed - a woman to lie on the witness stand.

Kirk's attorney, Chris Kolker of Belleville, told the jury in Madison County Circuit Court that the company persuaded the mentally ill woman to lie. The woman was not named in the motion to impose sanctions.
