ALTON - Just as the Salvation Army is beginning its annual Tree of Lights fund-raising campaign, it must find money to replace a rear retaining wall that crumbled recently from heavy rains.
"We are in the bid process," Capt. Randy Tooley said about the citadel, 525 Alby St. "It will cost at least $10,000. We have to replace the whole 36 feet of wall."
Tooley said insurance is not covering the cost of replacing the steep limestone wall. It is located by the staff parking lot, east of the main building and north of its shelter, the Booth House.
The Salvation Army has some money for capital improvements and possible building expansion, and will have to tap that fund, Tooley said.
The Salvation Army is not launching a separate fund-raising campaign to drum up money to pay for rebuilding the wall.
