Cary-Grove beats Providence Catholic to win 6A

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Alex Hembry ran for 187 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns to lead Cary-Grove to a 34-17 victory over Providence Catholic in the Illinois High School Association Class 6A state championship football game.

The teams met Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

The win gives Cary-Grove (14-0) its first state football title.

The Trojans totaled 414 yards thanks to Hembry, Tyler Krebs (77 yards running, 48 yards passing) and Stephen Hapanovich (72 yards running).

Providence, which was seeking its tenth state title, fell to 12-2. Quarterback Joey Houlihan threw for 124 yards and running back Tim Hanrahan ran for 73.
