Police release name of 4-year-old who drowned in Wood River pond

(KMOV) -- Police in Wood River recovered the body of a young boy who drowned in Wood River, Illinois Friday night.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 4-year-old Ryan McGrath of the 600 block of North 6th Street in Wood River.

Police said they found the body in a spillway leading to a retention pond off of North 9th St. in Wood River. They said the boy was playing with three other kids, sliding down the spillway.

The children returned home and told their parents that one of their friends went into the water. Firefighters received a 911 call at 6:38 p.m. and went into the water with personal flotation devices and pipe poles to find the boy. A dive team arrived at about 8 p.m. and recovered the child's body.
