(KMOV) – Several cars were stuck in high water on Interstate 55/70 near Exchange Avenue in East St. Louis.
Drivers said the water rose so quickly, they barely had time to get out of their vehicles on Wednesday evening. Four inches of rain dropped in less than two hours.
The Illinois Department of Transportation said the cause of the street flooding was the accumulation of plastic, paper, bottles and other debris covering the drainage grates. This prevented the storm water from draining properly into the interstate drainage system.
At least ten cars were stuck in the water. The interstate was flooded around 5 p.m. and did not re-open until approximately 9:30 p.m.
Rescuers said there were no injuries. The drivers either got out of their cars on their own or received help from the first troopers to get to the scene.
