(KMOV) – Police rescued an elderly man from his car in Pine Lawn Wednesday evening.

Residents in the area, near Edgewood and Lillian, say that within seven minutes water rose from one inch to ten feet deep.

Officers David Calaway and Officer Steven Blankey didn’t know anyone was in the car until they heard banging on the windows.

They swam into floodwaters, broke the rear window and pulled the passenger out of the car. The officers had no rescue gear so Officer David Beroyman used a garden hose to drag the driver back to safety.

By the time medical crews arrived on the scene, the car had become completely submerged.

The driver was breathing heavily and had cuts on his hands but did not suffer any serious injuries.
