ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Kyle Lohse threw a two-inning simulated game and is set to begin a rehab assignment next week, barring a setback.
Lohse is recovering from forearm surgery in late May. He says he was encouraged by Wednesday's workout, but wants to avoid getting overly enthusiastic.
Lohse, 1-4 with a 5.89 ERA in nine starts, could join the Cardinals' rotation early next month. He expects to be limited to 50 to 60 pitches on Monday with Triple-A Memphis and believes he'll need at least two rehab starts to build up endurance.
Lohse is one of two starters the Cardinals have been doing without since late May. There's no set timetable for the return of Brad Penny, who has an upper back injury.
