Three downtown bars could lose liquor licenses

(KMOV) – The Liquor Control Board will hold a hearing to discuss the futures of three downtown bars that city officials think have patrons that are contributing to recent crimes.

The Board may consider removing or suspending the liquor licenses of Sugar Lounge, Lure and 15.

Mark Winfield, operating owner of 15, issued a statement that said he gives full support to city officials and the police but doesn't believe his club is part of the issue.

"We feel strongly we are unjustly grouped in this nuance facilities accusation and respect the critical nature of this issue," said Winfield in the statement.

Mayor Francis Slay says the nightclub owners will be able to defend their clubs at hearings in the next couple of weeks. In an interview with Russell Kinsaul, the mayor said he wants everyone to come downtown but he wants them to be safe.
Police released statistics on shootings in the area where the businesses are located. In 2009 there were 13 shootings in the downtown west neighborhood and four shootings in 2010. There were also five homicides in 2009 and none in 2010 in the same neighborhood.
