(KMOV)-- One man is in custody and his accomplice is on the run after both men allegedly tried to steal telephone lines in Granite City.

Anthony L. Bazzell, 34, and Gregory D. Aulabaugh, 38, were charged with Criminal Damage To Property and Theft Over $300.

Police responded to a call that two suspects were attempting to cut down and steal telephone lines around 3:30 a.m. Friday in the 5000 block of Old Alton Road. When police arrived on the scene they located down telephone wires and an extension ladder.

Authorities said Bazzell was found hiding in a corn field near the down lines and was taken into custody without incident. Further evidence collected during the investigation lead to a warrant against Aulabugh who was identified as Bazzel's accomplice in the attempted theft.

Anyone having information on the whereabouts of Gregory D. Aulabaugh is asked to contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at 618-692-4433.
