New phone scam possibly targeting Missouri residents

(KMOV) – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents and businesses to be aware of a new phone scam.

Recently, Illinois and Ohio residents have been receiving phone calls from a person who calls himself Nick Fleming with the Missouri Financial Crimes Unit. He is described as having a Middle Eastern accent.

The man reportedly calls and says the phone call concerns the receiver’s son and requests a return call. When a return call is made the caller is asked to provide personal information like their date of birth and social security number.

Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer says that the Missouri Financial Crimes Unit does not exist. Preliminary investigations indicate the phone numbers are temporary numbers secured from a phone service internet provider. The IP address shows the calls are coming from overseas.

Boyer stresses the no one should provide personal information over the phone. Anyone who receives this type of call she contact local law enforcement.
