EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A southwestern Illinois man convicted of killing his 3-month-old son has been ordered to spend 35 years in prison despite the self-professed drug abuser's insistence that he's innocent.
Twenty-three-year-old Donald Miller was sentenced Friday in Madison County after asking for mercy in last October's death of Ashton Miller.
Jurors convicted Miller in April of first-degree murder. The boy's mother, 21-year-old Heather Smith, was sentenced earlier to 10 years in prison on a reduced count of aggravated battery.
Prosecutors say Smith was present when Miller punched and shook the baby at the couple's home near Granite City and pushed his face into a pillow, suffocating him.
Miller told the judge Friday he put his addiction to heroin before his two children's welfare.
