Animal shelters not the best place to surrender pets

(KMOV)-- Giving up a pet is never an easy choice, but the City of St. Louis Department of Health warns pet owners that animal shelters aren't the best place to turn.

"Bringing your pet to an animal shelter should be your tenth choice," said Pamela Walker, Interim Director of Health for the City of St. Louis.

Walker oversees animal control efforts and urges pet owners to look to family and friends before turning to over-crowded shelters.

According to Walker, between twenty and forty percent of animals surrendered to animals shelters are at risk for disease or for being euthanized. Yet while they realize shelters are the easiest route, pet owners that try to rehome their pets give the animals a better chance at a healthier life.

To help find a new home for those cats and dogs the Department of Health suggests posting photos of pets on Craigslist or at local veterinary clinics.
