Downtown welcomes oldest black sorority for biennial convention

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV) – If you’ve spent anytime downtown lately, you’re probably wondering why the city is decorated in pink and green.

It’s because Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is holding its biennial convention in St. Louis. The group’s official colors are salmon pink and apple green.

Alpha Kappa Alpha is the world’s oldest African American sorority, founded in 1908. The sorority was founded during a time when few African Americans were allowed to join traditional Greek-letter organizations.

The founder of Alpha Kappa Alpha is from St. Louis and graduated from Sumner High School in 1904.
