WILDWOOD, Ill. (AP) -- A 21-year-old U.S. Army Ranger from north suburban Chicago has died in Afghanistan after an explosion during an ammunition inventory.
The Department of Defense said Monday that Spc. Joseph Whiting Dimock of Wildwood died Saturday in the noncombat-related explosion. The U.S. Army Special Operations Command says another soldier was injured in the explosion. Dimock enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 2007 and served as a rifleman.
Dimock was assigned to Company E, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia. He previously served in Iraq and was serving his second Afghanistan deployment.
Dimock was awarded several medals during his military career.
The military says he is survived by his parents, Joseph and Ellen Dimock of Wildwood.
