(KMOV)—A pregnant elephant at the St. Louis zoo lost her baby calf overnight.
Ellie, an Asian elephant, was 36 weeks into her 22 month pregnancy when she lost her calf Wednesday night. She was expected to deliver in late summer of 2011.
Ellie was being monitored by veterinarians after having changes in her levels of progesterone. She had regular prenatal checkups and has been on a prenatal diet and exercise program.
Ellie has given birth to two calves, one in 1996 and another in 2006. One of them, Rani, is pregnant and is due next summer in 2011.
The zoo workers are sad about this loss.
