Illinois man, woman attempt to use forged checks from stolen car

(KMOV) – A man and a woman have been arrested in Bethalto, Illinois after attempting to use forged checks found in a stolen vehicle. 

On July 5, a car was reported stolen from the parking lot of the Cottage Hills V.F.W. at 121 S. Williams Street. The victim told the Madison County Sheriff’s Department that the keys were left in the unlocked vehicle along with a checkbook. The victim reported the checks stolen to the bank where they were issued.

Around 2 p.m. the following day, the Bethalto Police Department received a call from an employee at the Bank of Edwardsville in Bethalto who said a man and a woman were trying to cash one of the stolen checks.

The Bethalto Police Department arrested Janell Starkey, 32, of Bethalto and Andrew Bruce, 30, of Moro, Illinois at the bank. Detectives with the Bethalto Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Department continued the investigation and located the stolen vehicle at an address in Cottage Hills.

Bruce and Starkey face a felony charge of forgery. Bruce also faces charges related to the stolen vehicle. They have been transferred to the Madison County Jail. Bond was set at $75,000 for Bruce and $25,000 for Starkey.
