ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A top official with the Veterans Administration system toured a St. Louis VA hospital that possibly exposed nearly 2,000 veterans to viruses including hepatitis and HIV.
The inspection by William Schoenhard, a Veterans Health Administration deputy under secretary, follows revelations that veterans who received dental services at the VA medical center may have been infected by a sterilization procedure mistake.
Schoenhard toured the site Tuesday.
The VA says it has placed the medical center's dental chief on administrative leave as it investigates the matter. The VA said the risk of exposure is minimal.
The VA is offering free blood tests to screen for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
