Police hunt for killer in Hawk Point murder

The population for Hawk Point, MO, is said to be fewer than 500 people.  Late Saturday night, the man who owns Smitty's Garage, Jeff Smith, was shot outside his auto shop.  He died the next day.  Early reports were that he had been badly beaten but an autopsy showed that he died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Now the Major Case Squad is trying to track down his killer.  Smith was said to be well-known and well-liked in the town.  It's one of those small towns that everybody, pretty much, knows everybody else.  An anonymous donor has already established a reward in the case of $10,000 and donations can be made to the reward fund.  Anyone wishing to donate may do so through People's Bank & Trust in Troy, MO.

The Major Case Squad is asking for the public's help in this case.  Smitty's Garage is on the northwest side of Hawk Point along Route A.  Investigators are asking anyone who might have seen anything in that area on Saturday night between 10 and 11:30pm that might help in the investigation to contact them.  The Major Case Squad has set up a command center at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.  It can be reached at 636.528.8546 extensions #3222 or #3223.
