(KMOV.com) – Authorities say an adult male was arrested Thursday in connection to the shooting death of a 13-year-old Granite City teen.
Granite City Police Maj. Jeff Connor says he believes Clayton Veninga’s death Wednesday night was not accidental, though he didn’t elaborate on the possible motive or what led police to the suspect.
Connor said he expected to seek charges Friday against the suspect, who Connor said was an acquaintance of the victim and is old enough to be prosecuted as an adult.
Police said a group of people were sitting on the porch of an apartment complex in the 2000 block of Cleveland around 9:25 p.m. Wednesday when Veninga was shot in his side.
Authorities said he ran to a friend’s home three doors down to get help and collapsed on the back porch.
Veninga was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy was performed Thursday afternoon.
