( – Another round of rain has area residents on edge about flooded basements.

“This was all water - couple of inches everywhere,” said homeowner Jim Belcher. “As you can see, half the walls all over, the entire basement, has been taken out.”

The heavy rain from two weeks ago led to substantial water damage homes across the region. On the eve of another major storm, experts tell residents what they need to do to make sure their home stays dry.

The experts say if you have suspicion that your basement might flood, check your gutters, drains and sump pump. Make sure your belongings are either off the ground or in water-proof totes.

Jim Feltz of Woodard Restoration says gutters are often overlooked.

“Make sure the diversion is away from the foundation of the home. With the corrugated pipes, to make sure the drainage is actually appropriate away from the home, not only the gutters but the drainage as well,” Feltz said.

Companies like Woodard say they handled about five times the number of calls after the heavy rain in April. They say that they’re prepared for that kind of rush again if we receive excessive rain.
