Hitchcock: Emotional win is something to build on

(HockeyStL) – Coming close doesn’t cut it anymore. Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock says everyone is tired of that same old song and dance and the team’s Game 1 overtime victory will go a long way in showing his team that they can beat the Kings.

“I thought for the three periods we played a great hockey game we did the things we needed to do and played the way we needed to play,” said Hitchcock after the game.

“When they got that goal we probably tightened up a little bit and they showed why they win as they played with a little more confidence in the OT than we did.”

“We just have to play. When we play we are a good team, but we get a head of ourselves and we worry about getting ahead of ourselves instead of playing the game. I think that is what teams that have the experience of winning do, they just play,” he said.

Hitchcock felt the late goal and the OT win was a good learning experience for his team, and something to draw on in preparation for Thursday night’s Game 2.

Hitch was quick to point out that as the Blues played on Tuesday night, it was only good enough for a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation.

“We are going to have to find a way to keep getting better and better as this series moves on because we know in that room they will.”
