(BaseballStL) -- With bullpen issues spreading a cloud of uncertainty over the Cardinals throughout the first month of the season, the team made a move to try to change their fortune.

The Cardinals called up right-hander Seth Maness from Triple-A Memphis on Monday. The team optioned Marc Rzepczynski to make room for him on the active roster.

Maness, 24, posted a 2-2 record with a 4.32 earned run average while striking out 18 batters and issuing only three walks in 25 innings pitched this season. Although his earned run average isn’t spectacular, it’s his control that is appealing.

Maness has allowed only 18 walks in 247.2 innings pitched in his professional career. The control has enabled him to work six or more innings in 27 of his 38 career starts at the minor league level.

As a result, the team optioned Rzepczynski, who has struggled in nine appearances this season. He has allowed seven runs in eight innings pitched with no decisions and batters are hitting .361 against him.
