( – A 52-year-old man faces charges after an unborn child was killed in a head-on collision in St. Charles on March 16.

Paul Joseph Murphy was charged Tuesday with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and three counts of second-degree assault.

According to police, Murphy was driving a black Hyundai sedan in the 2800 block of W. Clay around 12 p.m. when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a red Toyota car before striking a Toyota SUV.

A man, woman and 3-year-old child in the Toyota sedan were all taken to the hospital with severe injuries. The woman was also 19-weeks pregnant. The unborn child was delivered stillborn at the hospital.

No injuries were reported from the silver Toyota SUV.

St. Charles police said it appeared Murphy was impaired when the accident occurred. Authorities said a blood test performed later showed he tested positive for benzodiazepines, which can have a sedative effect similar to muscle relaxers.

If convicted, Murphy faces up to 36 years in prison.

A warrant for Murphy’s arrest has been issued and his bond has been set at $50,000, cash only.
