CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) -- It's a long time between gigs, but country music legend George Jones is finally returning to Cape Girardeau.
Jones is set to play the grandstand at the SEMO District Fair on Sept. 15. He'll be backed by his keyboard player and bandleader Kent Goodson, a native Cape Girardeau native who graduated from Southeast Missouri State University.
Fair board president Pete Poe told the Southeast Missourian that Jones has been on their short list for several years, but this is the first time their schedules clicked.
Jones last performed in Cape Girardeau in August 1987, when he and Tanya Tucker played the first concert in the Show Me Center.
As for Jones' reputation for missing concert dates, Poe says the singer is a solid performer these days and has shaken off the "No Show Jones" tag.
