(KMOV)—The annual GO! St. Louis Marathon was shut down Sunday due to the heat.
More than 13,000 runners raced as scheduled in the streets of downtown St. Louis for the half-marathon. Those running the full marathon who did not reach the 9-mile mark by 9:15 a.m. were sent to the half-marathon course.
Ambulances were on standy along the race route, and several people had to be treated for heat sickness.
GO! St. Louis sponsored a wide range of activities that ran all weekend, including a health and fitness expo, a marathon relay with four-person teams, and a wheelchair marathon.
The GO! St. Louis Marathon and Family Fitness Weekend began 11 years ago with 2,500 attendees. Organizers expect the ten events this year will attract over 25,000 people.
