EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- East St. Louis voters have given Alvin Parks Jr. another four-year term as mayor.
Parks on Tuesday won a rematch of the 2007 mayoral campaign, getting roughly 53 percent of the voters to defeat former Mayor Carl Officer, who got nearly 43 percent. Four years ago, it was Officer who was the incumbent while Parks was the challenger.
Parks called the latest victory a vote of confidence in his efforts to turn around the struggling city of roughly 30,000 residents.
Officer operates an East St. Louis funeral home and serves on the East St. Louis school board.
